This Webinar examines English language education (ELE) in fast-changing peripheral contexts. As English becomes tied to national modernization, social mobility, and global integration, many countries, especially in Asia, have introduced major policy reforms, curriculum changes, and teacher development programmes. Yet classroom realities such as certification-driven incentives, exam-oriented learning cultures, and uneven initial teacher training often complicate these reforms. Drawing on policy analysis, teacher narratives, and classroom observations, the panel shows how teachers actively negotiate these tensions. Instead of treating peripheral contexts as passive adopters of global ELE models, the presentation highlights the agency of local teachers supported by international partners. By positioning Uzbekistan and Myanmar as contributors to ELE knowledge production, the session challenges centreβperiphery hierarchies and calls for greater recognition of under-explored contexts in global ELE discourse.
