Myanmar TESOL Association (MmTESOL)

Myanmar TESOL Association founding members

Myanmar TESOL Association (MmTESOL) was established with the support of the British Council to strengthen the English Language Teaching (ELT) community in Myanmar.

The origins of MmTESOL date back to 1998–1999, when the British Council launched the English Language Teachers’ Contact Scheme (ELTeCS) to connect and support ELT professionals globally. In Myanmar, ELTeCS was led by dedicated local ELT experts in collaboration with international educators. Prominent contributors included U Myint Aung (Y.E.S Language Centre), Krison Tan (Stanford City Business Institute), and Helen Johnston (British Council, Training Centre, Myanmar).

Under the coordination of the British Council, ELTeCS Myanmar organized regular workshops and annual conferences, creating valuable professional development opportunities for teachers across the country.

In 2013, ELTeCS Myanmar transitioned into an independent, non-profit, and non-governmental organization—MmTESOL—with the mission of supporting English language teachers and educators through continuous professional development.

The founding leadership team consisted of:

  • U Myint Aung, Chair
  • Daw Kathleen Thein, Co-Chair
  • Daw May May Win, Co-Chair
  • U Myo Than Tun, Coordinator

Today, MmTESOL continues to serve as a vibrant platform for English teaching professionals in Myanmar to connect, grow, and share knowledge.

Vision
To contribute towards the advancement of standards in English language education to enhance better learning outcomes in education in Myanmar.
Mission
We connect and collaborate with local, regional and international ELT and TESOL experts, practitioners and associations to share and learn about good professional policies and practices.

We organise continuous professional development programmes, such as seminars, workshops and webinars, lectures, training courses and conferences and other appropriate activities, for teachers of English to promote quality professional practices.

We take part in research studies on developments in English language education and its related fields.

Words of Acknowledgement

The passion and commitment that shines out from the MmTESOL group for their English Language Teaching (ELT) profession is inspiring to see, making every encounter with them an absolute pleasure. I was so impressed by the amount of time they dedicated to creating opportunities for ELT teachers from across the country to develop their skills and build their networks. They have also always been generous in sharing their expertise in other Forums, including via our British Council platforms such as English Connects webinars and the New Directions Conference. I wish them every success in their future endeavours and trust they continue to go from strength to strength.

I worked closely with MmTESOL when I was Director English at the British Council between 2014 and 2018, supporting their teacher training activities and encouraging their members to join our annual conference for English teachers as presenters or participants. MmTESOL’s contributions to English language teaching (ELT) in Myanmar have been invaluable, encouraging teachers’ lifelong learning and quality in English language classrooms. Their dedicated team provide a range of opportunities for teachers to develop and share their expertise with peers and those new to the profession. During the Covid pandemic when ELT shifted online MmTESOL gave teachers the practical support they needed as they adapted their ‘face-to-face’ methods for online learning. I was pleased to contribute to that initiative as a freelance ELT consultant and rallied support from ELT colleagues around the world. I wish them all the best for the future!
